This fall we began production of a weekly news show we've branded "The Northwest Minute." It's modeled after similar videos produced by the University of Iowa and Duke University. The primary purpose of the show is to promote campus activities.
Michelle and I typically meet on Tuesdays to go over a Google spreadsheet with the events she's culled from the university's online calendar. We write the briefs in a catchy fashion and usually have to limit the show to about six events. On average, the show ends up being 90 seconds long.
In past productions, I've used Adobe After Effects for green screen video. Due the AE's render times, I did some modest research to discover Adobe Premiere includes Ultra Key and allows for faster comping of the show.
While I was originally designing the show, I discovered that I could use a JPEG file as the background rather than having to render out a minute-long .mov file. And a student helped find the scrolling ticker feature in the title creator in Adobe Premiere.
The titles for "The Northwest Minute" were created in Adobe After Effects. I was inspired by motion graphics from A&E's Storage Wars. I will post several of the designs in another video showcasing some of the motion graphics I've built in the past four years.
One feature we didn't include was a countdown timer. We did find the code online so we wouldn't have to write our own. The countdown time is created using expressions in Adobe After Effects, which are created using Java programming. This is funny because I sort of chickened out on taking that class after Script Programming. I know I can do it, it was really about the time commitment to learning it. Now I have a really good reason to consider learning Java.
